Republican Senator John Kennedy cautioned his party on Sunday that economic concerns, particularly the rising cost of living, will determine the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking to NBC’s Kristen Welker, Kennedy acknowledged that while the contests will be competitive, inflation remains a significant challenge for Republicans. “We have to tell the American people the truth. Telling them not to believe their lying checkbooks is not going to work,” he said, emphasizing that voters’ financial struggles cannot be dismissed.
Economic Challenges Undercut GOP Messaging
The senator’s remarks come amid heightened focus on daily expenses in campaign rhetoric. While Kennedy noted that inflation has persisted at levels higher than pre-conflict in February. Annualized inflation reached 4.2 percent in May, a three-year high, and lingered at 3.4 percent in August, largely due to energy costs. Both Kennedy and Trump suggested that economic conditions would improve once the conflict with Iran concludes, though neither provided a timeline for resolution.
Despite Trump’s optimistic promises, Kennedy expressed skepticism about the Republican outlook. He described the Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton as “very, very close,” calling it an “unpopularity contest.” Recent polling by The New York Times shows Talarico leading in a state traditionally favoring Republicans, with Democrats also gaining ground in Alaska, Ohio, and Iowa. A new NBC poll of Latino voters revealed 69 percent disapprove of Trump’s presidency, with only 27 percent approving. Latinos trust Democrats more than Republicans on economic issues by 21 points—a stark reversal from 2024, when Trump held a 4-point advantage.
Democrats Seize Economic Narrative
Democratic strategist Rahm Emanuel framed the election as a referendum on Trump, citing “corruption and affordability issues” converging. Speaking before Kennedy on NBC, Emanuel stressed the need for Democrats to demonstrate tangible change post-election. While Latino support for Democrats has dipped to a net favorability of -1 percent, the party maintains a clear edge on economic trust among the demographic.
Poll Trends Signal Shift in Key States
Polling trends show Democrats gaining momentum in traditionally Republican areas. In Texas, the Senate race is tightening as Talarico gains ground against Paxton. Meanwhile, Trump’s 2024 achievement of winning the highest share of Latino votes for a Republican presidential candidate contrasts with this year’s backlash. Economic concerns, amplified by persistent inflation and energy costs, appear to be driving Latino voters toward Democrats, who they view as more trustworthy on affordability.
