About 60 percent of the roughly 600 real‑estate projects under review in Kolkata are expected to receive final clearance within days, according to the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI).
Technical review triggered by safety concerns
The review was launched after a warehouse collapse in the Taratala area prompted the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to order fresh technical scrutiny of all projects taller than four floors. That mandate halted new construction across the city while the technical committee examined compliance with safety standards.
CREDAI’s West Bengal president, Sushil Mohta, told a delegation meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari that about 330 proposals have already cleared the technical stage and now await approval from a high‑level committee.
Mohta said the state government has accelerated the process and will consider time‑bound undertakings for projects with minor deviations, a step he believes will allow construction to resume without compromising regulatory requirements.
Remaining hurdles and potential setbacks
Industry sources cited by media reports indicate that roughly 120 projects have yet to submit the necessary documents for scrutiny. Additionally, about two dozen developments could receive notices for deficiencies, which may prevent their approval.
The KMC has not commented publicly on the status of those pending cases, leaving developers to await further guidance.
CREDAI notes that the real‑estate sector draws annual investments of around Rs 20,000 crore to West Bengal and contributes nearly Rs 7,000 crore to the state treasury. It also supports close to five million jobs, making it the second‑largest employment generator after agriculture.

Apurva Salarpuria, CREDAI’s Kolkata president, said the quicker approval timeline will revive construction activity, benefiting developers, contractors, material suppliers, and the many workers linked to the sector. Former Kolkata president Sidhart Pansari added that industrial policy, land regulations, and approval mechanisms could enhance the state’s long‑term investment climate and urban development.
While the majority of projects appear poised for clearance, the pending documents and potential notices show that the process is not yet complete. Stakeholders are watching closely to see whether the expedited pathway will indeed translate into a sustained construction revival.
