Boeing invested over $200 million since 2024.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin have signed a $14.7 billion contract to increase production of Patriot missiles. The seven-year agreement aims to triple the production of PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) guidance systems, which are critical components for detecting and neutralizing various threats, including cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles, as well as enemy aircraft.

Expanding Production Capacity

To prepare for this increase, Boeing has already invested over $200 million since 2024, including the expansion of its Huntsville, Alabama, factory by 3,252 square meters. Boeing has modernized its facilities, refined its quality control protocols, and strengthened its network of national suppliers.

This expansion is expected to generate hundreds of new jobs, both direct and indirect, in the Alabama region. Steve Parker, director of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, emphasized that the company’s focus on quality and early investments have enabled this rapid ramp-up to protect international allies and critical assets.

Enhancing Defense Capabilities

The PAC-3 MSE is recognized as a leading Western defense tool, having proven its reliability in the Persian Gulf and Ukraine, where it has been deployed to protect key sites such as Kiev. Beyond its current land-based applications, Lockheed Martin plans to integrate these interceptors into the Aegis naval combat system, expanding their operational utility.

Efforts to increase capabilities extend throughout the supply chain. L3Harris Technologies has recently won a $4.7 billion contract for the production of rocket motors and attitude control systems and has launched the construction of two new factories in Arkansas, scheduled to come online in 2027. General Trends Ordnance and Tactical Systems has also signed a framework agreement to increase production of structural components, such as guidance system housings and motor cases.

These coordinated efforts are part of a broader strategy to triple PAC-3 MSE production and quadruple production of interceptors for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. By putting in place multi-year framework agreements that guarantee minimum annual quantities, the US government provides manufacturers with the stability needed for long-term investments, provided congressional funding is maintained.
